FlipSide guide 5/8/14: Hersheypark opens for season; BrewFest; Mother’s Day

Tonight:
— See the award-winning film “The Great Chicken Wing Hunt” 8 p.m. at Cobblestone’s Gastropub and Sports Complex, 205 S. George St, York. The screening coincides with the 50th anniversary of the invention of the Buffalo wing. [$5; attendees can enjoy half-priced wings and sign up for WingStock contests]
— Avenged Sevenfold will bring its “Shepherd of Fire Tour” to town 7 p.m. at Hershey’s Giant Center, 550 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey. Read an interview with opener Hellyeah. [$27.85, $42.35 and $52.35, plus taxes and fees]

Festivals:
— Raise money for the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday during the 2014 Vintage and Vineyards wine festival at the Antique Auto Museum, 161 Museum Drive, Hershey. Sample wines from around the world, many of which are poured by the winemakers. And tour wineries in the Hershey area during Spring Sensations.
— Hop over to the sixth annual BrewFest Saturday at Mount Hope Estate and Winery, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim Township. It includes unlimited beer sampling from 50 microbreweries, free food and live music. The first session is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the second is 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. [Tickets are limited and cost $40 in advance and $45 at the gate]
— Naylor Wine Cellars will hold a Rock N Blues Fest 1 to 10 p.m. Saturday at 4069 Vineyard Road, Hopewell Township. [$20 and there will be beer, vendors and food available; 21 or older]

For mom:
— Moms can take advantage of freebies at Arooga’s, Hershey Gardens and the Whitaker Center’s IMAX theater.
— Pick a flower pot, paint it and then plant a special gift for mom 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Flinchbaugh’s Orchard and Farm Market in Hellam Township. [$8 to make the craft]
— Many local restaurants offer Mother’s Day specials and meals. Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York Township and White Rose Bar and Grill in York are just a few places to try.
— Stroll downtown for the Olde York Street Fair Sunday in downtown York. It will feature more than 100 art and craft vendors, as well as food and live music. Stop into the York County Heritage Trust Historical Society Museum, 250 E. Market St., for an ice-cream treat noon to 5 p.m.
— The free Mother’s Day nature walk is 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Richard M. Nixon County Park in Springfield Township.
— J. Holiday will perform during the Million Dollar Mothers II event Sunday at the Valencia Ballroom, 142 N. George St., York. Doors open at 7 p.m. Music starts at 8 p.m. [$30 for general admission and $50 for VIP]

More music:
— The rock group Fuel, which was based in Harrisburg back in the day, returns to Central Pennsylvania for a show 7 p.m. Friday at the Chameleon Club, 223 N. Water St., Lancaster. [$18 to $20]
— Hear music from “Star Wars,” “Game of Thrones” and “The Legend of Zelda” during the York Symphony Orchestra’s “Games People Play” pops concert 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center, 50 N. George St., York. [$36, $46, $56; those 36 and younger pay their age for tickets]
— The York County Seniors Honor Choir will perform 3 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 25 W. Springettsbury Ave., York. [Free]

Art, theater and dance:
— Peruse merchants on North Beaver and West Philadelphia streets in York during the Bloom Art Market 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
— DreamWrights Youth and Family Theatre, 100 Carlisle Ave., York, presents “Dr. Doolittle” 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The show will include a sensory-friendly performance May 18. [$8 and $12]
— The Penguin Project at Gettysburg Community Theatre present Disney’s “Peter Pan Jr.” 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday at Gettysburg Area High School Auditorium, 1130 Old Harrisburg Rd., Gettysburg. [$11]
— Dance the day away during the inaugural Second Saturday on the Square event 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on Continental Square in York. Greater York Dance will run dance demos and lessons. [Free]

— See local art and hear local musicians 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday during the Second Saturday Art Gallery event at Office Furniture Outlet, 519 N. Franklin St., York. [Free; donations accepted]

Haar’s Drive-In in Carroll Township is open of the season. See the action flick “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ around 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday night. “Heaven is for Real” screens both nights at dusk.
— The Historic Newton Square Neighborhood Association hosts a Secret Gardens Tour of York 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The rain-or-shine event will feature 10 gardens, music and refreshments. Enter the tour at the corner of West Princess and South Newberry streets. [$10]
— Meet alpacas during The Breeders Showcase 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave, West Manchester Township. Don’t miss the fleece-to-shawl demo Saturday.
— Shank’s Mare Outfitters, 2092 Long Level Road, Lower Windsor Township, will host Kayak Demo Days 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Participants can test paddle various kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. [Free]
— Rev your engine at the York Biker BBQ and Car Show, which starts 11 a.m. Sunday at Cityview Community Church, 1655 Roosevelt Ave., York. Enjoy live music, barbecue and lots of chrome.
